Lesante Cape in Zakynthos, a resort built around the idea of place.

Zakynthos is an island almost everyone has seen before arriving. Navagio, Shipwreck Beach, with the rusting Panagiotis enclosed by limestone cliffs and electric-blue Ionian water, became one of the defining images of the Greek islands, reproduced across postcards, travel campaigns and social media for decades. It is an extraordinary landscape, but also a reminder of how easily an entire destination can become condensed into a single image. Beyond Navagio, decades of tourism have transformed Zakynthos, bringing an increasingly international hospitality landscape that does not always reveal much about the island beneath it.

Lesante Cape offers a different way into Zakynthos. Opened in Akrotiri in 2022, the resort looks to the island's architectural language, agriculture, food and patterns of communal life as the foundations of a contemporary resort. Rather than reproducing a historic village, it uses the village as an organizing idea for contemporary hospitality — shaping how guests move, gather, eat, retreat and encounter the landscape.

Lesante Cape is a new resort, and its village is deliberately constructed. What interested me during the stay was how consistently that idea shaped the way we actually moved through the property.

Living in the Village

The village idea becomes clearest in how Lesante Cape is arranged. Rather than concentrating everything within a single hotel block, the property unfolds through smaller structures connected by stone paths, gardens and courtyards. At its center is the plateia, the traditional village square, where a taverna, kafenio, small shops, church, and museum form a social heart before pathways lead to residences, pools, and the sea.

The architectural references are distinctly Zakynthian rather than generically Greek. Centuries of Venetian influence shaped an island very different from the white-and-blue shorthand associated with the Cyclades. Rough stone, terracotta, timber shutters and deep arches are interpreted through contemporary proportions and restrained interiors. Olive trees and planting soften the buildings, while openings repeatedly frame the landscape: a courtyard glimpsed through an arch, water appearing beyond a pergola, or the Ionian suddenly visible between two stone structures. There is rarely one monumental reveal. Lesante Cape unfolds incrementally, as a village would.

The accommodations form part of that composition. Suites and villas are distributed throughout the grounds as individual residences ranging from intimate suites to one-, two-, and three-bedroom pool villas and larger configurations for extended families and groups. Many have private pools and substantial outdoor living spaces, while kitchens and dining areas in the larger villas make longer stays particularly appealing. Inside, stone, timber and natural textures continue the architectural vocabulary without allowing the vernacular references to overwhelm contemporary comfort.

From our villa, it was easy to disappear behind the gate for much of the afternoon, then walk back into the plateia for dinner, resume the village life.

A Village Built Around the Table

Food is where Lesante Cape's village concept becomes most tangible. Dining is scattered throughout the property, giving each part of the village a different rhythm. You might find yourself eating among the gardens, stopping for something casual beside the pool, gathering around a table in the plateia, or dressing for dinner above the Ionian. Over several days, choosing where to eat becomes another way of moving through the resort.

Our favorite expression of this is Bostani Farm to Table. Set within the property's gardens, Bostani brings the source of the meal into the experience itself: vegetables, fruit and herbs grow around you before appearing at the table, with the cooking drawing on Zakynthian traditions and what is available from the land. The setting remains intentionally rustic—baskets of produce, terracotta vessels, an open kitchen and tables surrounded by planting. It is uncomplicated in spirit, and that simplicity is precisely its appeal. "Farm-to-table" can be an increasingly abstract promise in luxury hospitality; here, the farm is quite literally part of where you are eating.

Elsewhere, the experience becomes more social. The Village Taverna occupies the convivial world of the square, drawing on Greek home cooking and regional recipes in a setting that makes sense of the plateia as more than an architectural device. Novita, by contrast, belongs to the relaxed rhythm of the pool and sea, with Mediterranean dishes, seafood and local produce suited to long lunches and days when leaving the water feels unnecessary.

Fiore changes the register. Set high on the cape with an expansive view across the Ionian, the restaurant is particularly striking around sunset, when the horizon and changing light become inseparable from dinner. Here the culinary language becomes more precise and ambitious. Chef Aggelos Bakopoulos approaches Zakynthian and wider Ionian flavors through contemporary fine dining, taking ingredients and preparations associated with the region and giving them a more intricate, modern expression. The progression from Bostani's garden and the familiar generosity of the taverna to Fiore's composed plates reveals several very different ways of interpreting the same island.

There are also bars, cafés, the wine cellar and other places to stop between these larger experiences. At Lesante Cape, you do not simply choose a restaurant; you move through the village to eat.

Where the Village Meets the Ionian

For all the attention given to the idea of a village, Lesante Cape ultimately belongs to the sea. The Ionian appears repeatedly throughout the property, through arches, beyond pergolas and at the end of gardens, keeping the stone architecture and enclosed courtyards connected to the wider landscape.

Water is woven through the resort at several scales. Private pools extend many villas into their own outdoor worlds, while larger communal pools become social spaces. Some of the most memorable moments are also the simplest: hammocks beneath timber pergolas, shaded terraces facing the horizon, or an afternoon when pool, garden and sea seem to occupy the same view.

Below the cape, steps lead down toward a secluded cove and pier at the foot of the cliffs. Its intimacy is a striking contrast to the scale and spectacle associated with so much of Zakynthos's coastline. There is no attempt to compete with Navagio, instead, access to the Ionian becomes quieter and more immediate: a swim below the property, time on the small beach, then the climb back through the landscape toward the village above.

Despite everything contained within the resort, the landscape repeatedly pulls attention outward. Olive trees, gardens, stone and shifting views of the Ionian keep the property connected to what surrounds it.

The village provides Lesante Cape its structure; the sea gives it its horizon.

The Island Within

The strongest measure of Lesante Cape comes when you leave it.

Beyond the resort, elements that first seemed particular to Lesante Cape begin to appear across Zakynthos in different forms: a village square where people gather, cultivated land beside the road, a family taverna, stone houses opening toward gardens, the Ionian appearing beyond them.

Lesante Cape has already introduced you to this vocabulary. Its plateia, gardens, pathways, residences, and relationship with the sea are not isolated gestures, but contemporary interpretations of patterns rooted in the island.

What changes is how you read them when you return. After spending time elsewhere on Zakynthos, the village at Lesante Cape feels like an extension of the place around it. The references become clearer because you have encountered their origins elsewhere on the island.

The exchange works both ways. Through its food, landscape, architecture, and views of the Ionian, Lesante Cape continually directs your attention outward, encouraging you to understand more of what shaped it.

That movement between resort and island is what makes the idea convincing.

You leave the resort looking for Zakynthos; you return recognizing how much of Zakynthos was already there.
