Red Chalet — The Algarve's Red Icon

What if the best way to experience the Algarve isn’t through a resort at all, but through your own house on the Atlantic?
At Red Chalet, that possibility feels remarkably natural. Set directly along the waterfront of Armação de Pêra, the historic residence combines the character and privacy of a private home with the hospitality, gastronomy and expertise of Vila Vita Collection. It occupies an unusual middle ground between an independent villa and a five-star resort, giving us the freedom to shape our days while having an exceptional level of service at our disposal.
We could begin the morning barefoot on the beach or with private yoga overlooking the Atlantic, retreat for a treatment and sauna, gather around our own table for a meal prepared by a private chef, or head to two-Michelin-starred Ocean for one of Portugal’s most accomplished dining experiences. When we wanted to venture farther, a private boat took us west along the Algarve’s limestone coastline toward Benagil and Praia da Marinha.
In many ways, the Algarve begins at Red Chalet’s front door.
The setting makes that proposition particularly compelling. Red Chalet stands prominently in Armação de Pêra, a historic fishing town, with the beach directly below and local life continuing beyond its gates. Inside, the house, gardens and waterfront terraces create a world of their own, allowing us to remain connected to the destination while having a place entirely ours.
A Century at The Edge of The Atlantic
Against the whites and sandy neutrals of Armação de Pêra, Red Chalet’s deep terracotta façade, pale stonework and tiled roof have given the house a distinctive presence along this stretch of coastline for more than a century.
Originally known as the Chalet dos Caldas e Vasconcelos, it was built in 1908 as the summer residence of a family from nearby Silves and remained in the family for almost 80 years. Inspired by the Belle Époque architecture fashionable in southern France at the time, it has since become a listed historic building and one of Armação de Pêra’s recognizable landmarks.
Its restoration preserved much of that identity, from the original wooden floors and imposing staircase to antique chandeliers and geometric details across the shutters and ceilings that reference the Moorish influence embedded throughout southern Portugal.
What we appreciated most was how naturally the house still functions as a home. Rich blue velvets, botanical patterns, contemporary artworks and collected objects give the interiors personality, while crystal chandeliers and ornate plasterwork retain the grandeur of the original architecture. The confident mix of periods, colors and textures gives Red Chalet an individual character that distinguishes it from the pale stone and neutral palettes now prevalent across contemporary luxury villas.
Perhaps because Red Chalet was conceived as a family summer residence, its rooms retain an intimacy that makes them remarkably personal. Within a short time, the salon becomes somewhere to read after the beach, the dining room somewhere to gather over wine, and the terrace the place everyone instinctively returns to under the sun.
Two Houses, Two Personalities
The estate combines the historic Red Chalet with the adjoining White House, creating four bedrooms for up to eight guests while allowing two distinct architectural personalities to coexist.
The 260-square-metre main house contains two ensuite bedrooms upstairs, with Atlantic views and a balcony, while the ground floor moves through interconnected living, dining and reading spaces toward the kitchen and expansive seafront terrace. This is where the property’s historical character is most expressive, with ornate ceilings, chandeliers, French doors, saturated colors and richly layered furnishings retaining the feeling of a grand early-20th-century home.
A few steps away, the charming White House introduces a more contemporary interpretation of coastal living. Its duplex suite and separate studio each have ensuite bathrooms, while white surfaces, timber and cleaner architectural lines create a lighter counterpoint to the historic residence.
The distinction is aesthetically interesting and also makes Red Chalet particularly well suited to multigenerational families and groups of friends. Everyone can share meals, the pool and long afternoons outside while retaining genuinely separate spaces. That balance between togetherness and independence became one of the property’s most practical luxuries during our stay.
Privacy in the Middle of It All
Red Chalet’s greatest asset may ultimately be its position.
The property sits directly against the waterfront, with the Atlantic beyond its terraces, the beach below and Armação de Pêra immediately behind it. The town grew from one of the Algarve’s longstanding fishing communities, and although tourism has transformed the coastline around it, its relationship with the sea remains visible in everyday life.
Red Chalet places us directly within that environment while creating enough separation for the house to feel truly private. It is a distinctive form of privacy: embedded within an active coastal community rather than removed from it.
Much of our time naturally gravitated toward the expansive outdoor terrace. The heated swimming pool runs alongside the deck, framed by the historic house, palms and Atlantic beyond, while private access leads directly to the beach below. A dedicated wellness area includes a sauna and treatment room, with treatments from Vila Vita’s Spa by Sisley Paris available on demand.
These experiences easily become part of the rhythm of the day. A private morning yoga session overlooking the water can lead into breakfast outside and a walk along the beach; an afternoon swim followed by a treatment or sauna before everyone reconvenes for drinks as the light changes over the Atlantic. The ability to move between them at our own pace became one of the defining qualities of the stay.
From Our Own Table to Ocean
Red Chalet’s relationship with Vila Vita Parc becomes particularly compelling through gastronomy.
A dedicated Villa Manager and housekeeping team form the foundation of the service, while private chefs, sommeliers and the wider expertise of Vila Vita can be brought directly into the residence. For us, this created two distinctly different ways of dining.
At home, a private chef can take over the kitchen while the terrace becomes the dining room, allowing lunches and dinners to follow the pace of the people around the table. Wine tastings can similarly be arranged in the villa, transforming the experience into something shared yet exclusive.
When we wanted the full theatre of a destination restaurant, one of Portugal’s most celebrated dining rooms was waiting within the same hospitality family. At two-Michelin-starred Restaurante Ocean, Austrian-born chef Hans Neuner has spent nearly two decades in the Algarve, becoming one of the leading figures in contemporary Portuguese gastronomy. His cooking reflects that journey, bringing together the Austrian roots that shaped him and the country he chose as home.
His latest Essence Menu makes that personal journey particularly clear, beginning with references to Neuner’s Austrian childhood and heritage before moving toward Portugal’s Atlantic waters, local producers and traditional recipes, interpreted through the knowledge and influences accumulated throughout his career.
From barnacles with green almonds, seaweed and garlic confit to blue belly shrimp with pumpkin, beurre noisette and curry, the progression moves fluidly between memory and discovery. Tuna belly, lesser slipper lobster, sea bass and moray eel continue the conversation with the Atlantic, while Portuguese references sit alongside those drawn from Neuner’s own history.
Meeting Hans gave us another perspective on Ocean. Open, charismatic and remarkably free in his creativity, he carries an infectious energy alongside an acute attention to execution. Watching him work with his team from the chef’s table revealed a chef completely engaged with both the people and precision behind every dish.
Our visit behind the scenes revealed another dimension of that creativity: an extraordinary archive of tableware and sculptural serving pieces developed for Ocean’s menus over the years. Coral forms, marine creatures, abstract vessels and objects created for individual dishes fill the shelves, forming an almost museum-like record of how the restaurant’s visual language has evolved alongside Neuner’s cooking.
The wine pairing extended the exploration beyond the Algarve. Among the bottles, the 2022 Caracol dos Profetas Fazendas da Areia from Porto Santo was particularly memorable, bringing another expression of Portugal’s Atlantic landscape into the experience.
Ocean creates a fascinating counterpoint to dining at Red Chalet: one evening can unfold around our own table, while another takes us into the highly orchestrated world of a fine dining gourmet kitchen. Together, they demonstrate the range of culinary experiences available while Red Chalet remains our private base on the coast.
A Private Passage Through The Algarve
The Atlantic that had accompanied us from almost every window of Red Chalet eventually became our route into the Algarve itself.
Seen from the water on our private yacht via Vila Vita Collection, the coastline takes on an entirely different scale. Golden limestone cliffs reveal arches, fissures, and enormous chambers concealed from the roads above, while small beaches appear beneath rock formations continuously shaped by the sea.
Around celebrated landmarks and natural wanders along the coastline, exploring privately gave us greater control over both pace and perspective. Rather than following a fixed sightseeing route, we could respond to the water, the landscape and whatever caught our attention along the way.
From Portimão, we traveled past Praia de Boião and Farol da Ponta do Altar, continuing toward Carvoeiro, Gruta da Boneca, Algar da Boneca, Benagil Cave and Praia da Marinha.
Having our own small yacht changed the experience considerably. We could linger where the coastline became particularly dramatic, approach caves when conditions allowed, stop to swim, snorkel, or paddleboard, and return on board for a beautifully prepared Champagne lunch.
The real luxury was having control over time. It gave us the space to appreciate the Algarve’s extraordinary geology and explore beyond a succession of photographed landmarks. After several days of seeing the Atlantic from Red Chalet, being on the water completed our understanding of the landscape in the region.
The Algarve, On Our Own Terms
This is where Red Chalet’s proposition becomes most convincing. The infrastructure and expertise of Vila Vita Collection give the house an exceptional depth of service, while its independence allows each day to remain personal. For families and groups, Red Chalet becomes a shared home rather than a collection of hotel rooms. The two houses provide genuine space when privacy is needed, while the wider Vila Vita ecosystem expands what can be experienced from this single address.
Over several days, we began to appreciate how naturally the different elements connected. The history remains present in the architecture, Armação de Pêra continues beyond the gates, and the Atlantic runs through the experience.
Red Chalet ultimately achieves something increasingly valuable in the Algarve: privacy with a genuine connection to place, exceptional service with independence, and a distinctive way of living within the destination.
For a few days, Red Chalet gives us the rare privilege of experiencing the Algarve as our own, with the keys, freedom and time to discover it entirely on our terms.
