Grand Hotel Son Net in Mallorca is an extraordinary destination for maximalist design and palatial living.

In Mallorca's Tramuntana foothills, a 17th-century palacio has been revived with extraordinary decorative imagination. Behind its elaborate interiors, an intimate country estate offers one of the island's most private and absorbing hospitality experiences.

The first thing we noticed at Grand Hotel Son Net was how little we noticed anyone else.

The palace rises above Puigpunyent, a traditional village in western Mallorca, its terracotta façade framed by gardens and the wooded slopes of the Serra de Tramuntana. Inside, rooms are filled with unique antiques, tapestries, patterned upholstery and references to centuries of decorative history. Yet the atmosphere is wonderfully unhurried.

With just 31 rooms and suites distributed between the historic palace and adjoining cottages, Son Net feels remarkably private. We wandered through its salons, gardens and terraces, often without encountering another guest. On an island whose most celebrated coastal destinations have become increasingly busy, such freedom is a luxury in itself.

The property's greatest pleasure, however, is discovery. Every doorway introduces another aspect of its history, from vaulted stone passages and intimate sitting rooms to courtyards opening toward the mountains. Exploring Son Net feels closer to inhabiting an extraordinary private residence than staying in a conventional hotel.

Son Net is like a story book and has gone through many lives for generations.

The Many Lives of Son Net

Son Net's origins date to 1672, when the estate was established as a private Mallorcan residence. Over successive generations, it passed through different hands, acquiring the architectural details and stories that distinguish it today.

Carved wooden ceilings, stone floors, arched passageways, original fireplaces, and historic courtyards recall the scale and ambition of the former household. A private chapel and spring-fed well remain among the estate's features.

On the palace's terracotta façade, a sundial bears the Latin inscription Omnia tempus abent — “There is a time for everything.” Dated 1998, it marks the year American hotelier David Stein transformed Son Net into a hotel, introducing an international audience to this secluded corner of Mallorca. More than two decades later, the property entered a new era under Javier López Granados and the team behind Finca Cortesin, the acclaimed Andalusian resort.

Reopening in 2023 after an extensive renovation, Son Net retained the intimacy of its residential origins while adopting the hospitality expertise and attention to detail associated with Finca Cortesin.

For its interiors, the new ownership turned to Madrid-based designer, art historian and antiques collector Lorenzo Castillo.

His approach is unapologetically exuberant. Fabrics, paintings, antique furniture and decorative objects draw on Spanish aristocratic traditions and influences from other periods and cultures. Patterned walls meet velvet upholstery; gilded frames sit beneath dark timber ceilings; rich textiles and antique furnishings create a series of highly individual rooms.

We were fascinated by the transitions between these spaces. One salon might display an elaborate coffered ceiling and classical paintings, while another introduces intensely patterned fabrics, sculptural furniture and unexpected combinations of color.

The interiors suggest a residence assembled through generations of collecting, even where the decorative schemes are newly conceived. Castillo has brought his own imagination to the palace without obscuring its architectural history.

A Different Kind of Palace Stay

No two rooms at Son Net are intended to feel identical, making the choice of accommodation unusually interesting. The grandest suites are extraordinary expressions of palatial living, where historic architecture and Castillo's decorative imagination become inseparable.

The Grand Son Net Suite is arguably the property's crown jewel. Original carved wooden ceilings, vintage tiled floors, and a monumental fireplace establish its historic character, while the bedroom, with two queen beds surrounded by elaborate drapery and richly patterned fabrics, feels almost theatrical. Its composition recalls the private chambers of an aristocratic residence, complete with the intimacy and ceremony of another era.

The generous bathroom with a daybed and adjoining living spaces continues the decorative richness, while a private arched portico opens toward the gardens, swimming pool, and Puigpunyent valley. It is an exceptional example of how an individual room can express the personality of an entire property.

Equally fascinating is the Grand Suite Luis Salvador, situated on the palace's second floor. Original timber details, a separate living room, dressing area, and private office give it the character of a self-contained residence. Its 45-square-meter terrace provides a commanding view over the estate and surrounding mountains.

During our visit, the team shared a story associated with the suite: according to local lore, a discreet passage once allowed its namesake to enter and leave the residence privately. Whether historical fact or palace legend, the account adds intrigue to a room already rich in personality. Standing on its terrace, overlooking the grounds and valley, one can appreciate the unusual perspective afforded by its elevated position.

For families seeking additional independence, the Pool Cottage House offers two bedrooms, a living area, a private garden and swimming pool. Interconnecting rooms within the main palace provide further possibilities for multigenerational stays.

The accommodation offers two distinct experiences: the historic palacio, where guests are surrounded by its architectural and decorative heritage, and the cottages, which provide greater independence in nature.

Beyond the Palace Walls

Son Net occupies approximately 57,000 square meters of private grounds, with landscaped terraces descending toward the valley, swimming pools, shaded cabanas, orchards and agricultural spaces.

We spent much of our time exploring the estate on foot, following paths through flowering gardens, beneath mature trees and into smaller courtyards. Beyond the formal grounds, vegetable gardens and a small farm introduce a quieter, distinctly rural Mallorca. Sheep resting beneath the trees, horses, and the rhythms of agricultural life were among the unexpected pleasures of our stay.

The private vineyard is another highlight. Planted with Malvasia grapes, it produces wine for the property, with guided visits introducing guests to this historic Mediterranean variety. Tastings can be arranged in a shaded gazebo overlooking the vines, bringing the estate's agricultural traditions into the hospitality experience.

The main outdoor pool occupies a beautiful position above the valley, framed by palms, cypress trees and terraced gardens. Shaded cabanas and smaller outdoor spaces offer places to spend an afternoon surrounded by the Tramuntana landscape.

Beyond the estate, Puigpunyent provides an appealing introduction to village life in western Mallorca. Electric bicycles are an enjoyable way to explore the surrounding country lanes, while hiking and cycling routes lead deeper into the mountains.

The proximity of these experiences makes Son Net rewarding for longer stays. Guests can explore the countryside and local village life without sacrificing the pleasures of returning to the estate.

A New Chapter in Wellness

One of Son Net's most significant recent additions is its spa, which opened in 2024.

Integrated into the landscaped terraces, the wellness complex extends across more than 1,000 square meters. Its architecture provides a striking counterpoint to the historic palace, with an atmospheric indoor pool beneath deep terracotta-colored vaulted ceilings.

The effect is almost subterranean. Soft light enters through openings in the vaults, illuminating the water and textured surfaces. Repeated arches and warm, earthy colors create an architectural composition unlike the pale, minimalist interiors often associated with contemporary wellness retreats.

The thermal facilities include a sauna, Turkish bath, Japanese pool and ice fountain, alongside five treatment rooms. A contemporary fitness area overlooks the mountains, extending the spa's relationship with the surrounding landscape.

We were especially taken by the heated indoor salt-water pool. Its dramatic burgundy arches and sculptural architecture make the space memorable in its own right, while the quiet atmosphere provides a welcome retreat during cooler weather or after a day outdoors.

The addition gives Son Net a substantial wellness offering without compromising the character of the original residence.

The Pleasures of the Table

Gastronomy is central to life at Son Net, with menus drawing on Mallorcan ingredients, local producers and the estate's own gardens.

Breakfast deserves attention. Served with a sense of ceremony, it brings together freshly prepared dishes, fruit, regional cheeses, cured meats, homemade preserves and an extensive selection of juices. Enjoyed outdoors, with the gardens and mountains beyond the table, it became one of our favorite rituals.

For dinner, Mar&Duix offers a refined interpretation of Mallorcan cuisine. Its historic dining room, arranged across different levels and richly decorated with traditional furnishings, provides an intimate setting for the evening. When the weather permits, the outdoor terrace takes on a more festive atmosphere, with live music accompanying dinner on selected occasions.

The menu reveals a thoughtful approach to regional ingredients. Among the dishes we enjoyed were Cantabrian anchovies with smoked sheep's milk butter and potato coca, alongside a Mallorcan octopus empanada with onion and organic sobrasada. Red prawn and saffron risotto with fennel, green asparagus and smoked chili oil offered depth and warmth, while fresh pea and goat cheese cappellacci, accompanied by mint, preserved lemon and basil, provided a lighter contrast.

For the main courses, wild sea bass with creamy cuttlefish rice, slow-confit calçots and orange sauce was especially memorable. Lamb loin with an olive crust, pea purée and lemon thyme-verjus emulsion demonstrated the kitchen's precise handling of Mediterranean flavors. The cooking draws on regional traditions while allowing room for contemporary techniques and international influences.

During warmer weather, El Gazebo provides a relaxed alternative beside the pool. Beneath green-and-white striped awnings, wicker chairs, white tablecloths and hanging glass lanterns establish an atmosphere reminiscent of a private Mediterranean country club.

We enjoyed leisurely lunches overlooking the valley, with Iberian ham, fresh seafood and Spanish dishes served beneath the trees. The rabbit paella, presented in its traditional pan, was a true highlight.

The Green Bar offers another interpretation of the palace's personality. Stone arches, richly patterned walls, antique furnishings and intimate seating areas create an evocative setting for cocktails and wines after dinner.

Between the historic dining rooms, lush terraces and atmospheric bar, Son Net offers enough culinary variety for an extended stay, with each venue retaining an identity of its own.

The Intimacy of Grandeur

Staying at Son Net is like opening a storybook. Its rooms, passageways and courtyards reveal fragments of Mallorca's noble history, while the stories passed down through the estate give even the smallest architectural details a sense of intrigue. No two spaces tell quite the same story.

Lorenzo Castillo's decorative imagination has added another layer to this history, creating interiors that are as expressive as the lives once associated with the palace. Under its latest ownership, that creative ambition has extended into a contemporary vision of hospitality, where the original residence and its surrounding landscape remain central to the experience.

What distinguishes Son Net is how naturally these different periods and ambitions coexist. The palace celebrates its history without becoming a museum, while the intimacy of its scale allows guests to experience an exceptional level of privacy and personal freedom.

The palace's history invites curiosity; its contemporary reinvention gives guests the rare privilege of becoming part of that continuing story.
